(More customer reviews)Introduction:
I saw this product in Forbes.com's top 10 nanotech products of 2004 and decided that at under $15 dollars it would at least be a good conversation starter. Well after it arrived in a cardboard poster protector, things only got better. This product really can make your windshield wipers irrelevant (at least at highway speeds).
Application:
The instructions suggest application to clean windows in temperatures above 55 degrees. So I waited a few days until it warmed up to about 60 and took my car through an automatic carwash at a local gas station. I then activated the product (by cracking the internal glass container) and then began to wipe the applicator pad onto my dry windows.
The one problem that I noted is that the applicator doesn't ever get as wet as you expect it to. This caused me a bit of anxiety because I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong or if this product would leave some type of streaking on my windows if I didn't apply it evenly. However, these anxieties turned out to be for naught, because if you just keep shaking the thing it will generate enough liquid to sufficiently cover all the parts of you windows (although I cannot vouch for a large SUV since I have a Toyota Camry). In addition so long as you wipe off the windows with the included cloth, there is no visible effect (e.g. streaking, fogging, etc) to the windows at all.
Results:
The first thing that I noticed is that when I used my windshield washer fluid, the trajectory of the fluid would carry it off of my windshield before the wipers even had a chance to touch the fluid.
The next weekend I had to go for a 100 mile drive in the rain at night. I was amazed by the fact that during my entire drive I never once used my windshield wipers. It is definately a surreal experience to see the clouds of rain coming off the 18 wheeler in front of you and then passing by your windshield without effecting your visibility.
The one caveat is that the tiny beads of water which generally don't effect your visibility do become a problem when you go under a bright light (like a street-light). In my experience the glare from the light will reflect in the latent water on the windshield and cause a momentary loss of visibility. However, this can easily be resolved by using you windshield wipers on the very low setting.
As a disclaimer, I have not yet driven in full daylight in the rain with this Clarity Defender, but I'm guessing it won't be as good as driving in the dark due to the glare issues.
In total, this product is well worth the 15 dollars it costs and I have highly reccomended it to my friends and family.
